Governor Makinde, Alaafin, Others Attend Lecture Honouring Former FirstBank CEO
The 11th Public Lecture of the Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, was held on July 3, 2025, in honour of former FirstBank CEO and Sigma alumnus, Dr Adesola Adeduntan. The lecture was delivered by the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Dr Karl Toriola.
In his lecture titled “Leveraging Technology and Digital Education for Mass Employment, Wealth Creation and Poverty Alleviation,” Dr Toriola highlighted key challenges facing Nigerian youths, including poor access to digital tools, lack of skills, and limited job opportunities. He called for expanded digital infrastructure, employable education, and stronger institutions to help youths succeed.
The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Fola Sunday, said the lecture was timely and urged youths to embrace technology. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, represented by Prof. Peter Olapegba, said the world now values innovation and adaptability more than academic excellence alone.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, praised the theme of the lecture and advised youths to use technology for national development. Dr Adeduntan, the honouree, thanked the Sigma Club and emphasized that technology must be combined with vision and determination to create lasting change.
Among many other dignitaries present were Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola, Pro-Chancellor of Lead City University, and Dr Gani Adeniran, an elder Sigma alumnus.
